Japan Organization for Metals and Energy Security (“JOGMEC”), PT Pertamina (Persero) (“PERTAMINA”), PT Pertamina EP (“PEP”) and Japan Petroleum Exploration Co., Ltd. (“JAPEX”) have signed a Joint Study Agreement (“JSA”) aiming for implementing CO2 inejction field test in the Sukowati oil field in East Jawa, Republic of Indonesia.
The signing ceremony of the JSA was held in the 47th IPA Convention and Exhibition on July 25, 2023 witnessed by Ms. Nicke Widyawati, President Director & CEO, PERTAMINA, Mr. Mirza Mahendra, Director of Oil and Gas Engineering and Environment, Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources (“MEMR”) and Mr. Noor Arifin Muhammad, Director of Upstream Oil and Gas Business Development, MEMR.
JOGMEC and PERTAMINA together with PEP, a subsidiary of PERTAMINA, started a joint study on CO2 injection in the Jatibarang field in West Jawa, Indonesia in August 2022, and successfully implementated CO2 Huff and Puff test at the field. Furthermore, in April 2023, JOGMEC and PERTAMINA signed a Memorandum of Understanding to create future business opportunities in contributing to energy transition and security in both countries.
In the Sukowati oil field, PEP and JAPEX together with other partners, have been conducting a feasibility study of CCUS project using the Joint Crediting Mechanism (JCM). The four parties, including JOGMEC, have agreed to launch a joint study aiming for implementing CO2 injection field test in the Sukowati oil field.
The four parties plan a field test using the CO2 Huff and Puff to demonstrate and verify the effectiveness of CO2-EOR (Enhanced Oil Recovery) and CO2 underground storage in the Sukowati oil field. Through this JSA, we will perform the test design and preparation work toward the implementation of the field test.
JOGMEC is committed to improving Japan’s energy security and contributing to sustainable economic development and carbon neutrality in the Asian region, including Indonesia, based on the Asian Zero Emission Community (AZEC) concept and the Asian Energy Transition Initiative (AETI), both led by the government of Japan. JOGMEC will contribute to the improvement of Japan’s energy security and realization of sustainable economic development and carbon neutrality in Indonesia and other Asian countries.
