Shell Company of Thailand and EGAT signed an MOU to study clean energy development with the aim to reduce GHG emissions and drive Thailand toward Net Zero Emissions by 2065.
Mr. Boonyanit Wongrukmit, Governor of Electricity Generating Authority of Thailand (EGAT), and Mr. Panun Prachuabmoh, Country Chairman & Chief Financial Officer of the Shell Company of Thailand Limited (Shell), signed the Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) on the study of clean energy technologies such as Carbon Capture Utilization and Storage (CCUS) and alternative fuels for electricity generation on March 10, 2023 at EGAT 50th Anniversary Building, EGAT Headquarters, Nonthaburi Province.
Mr. Boonyanit Wongrukmit, EGAT Governor, said that to support Thailand’s commitment in the 26th United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP26) to achieve Carbon Neutrality by 2050 and Net Zero Emissions by 2065, EGAT has implemented the Triple S strategy comprising Sources Transformation: increase renewable energy share in the generation mix and develop new technologies to support renewable electricity generation, Sink Co-creation: increase sources for carbon sequestration through One-Million-Rai Reforestation Project and the study of CCUS, and Support Measures Mechanism: enhance public participation in greenhouse gas reduction through Energy-Saving Label No.5 Project and Green Classroom Project as well as promote EV deployment. This cooperation aims to study clean energy technologies covering CCUS and the use of hydrogen and ammonia as alternative fuels for electricity generation. These technologies will help reduce CO2 emissions in the context of Thailand that still depends on fossil fuels for electricity generation to maintain energy security and meet the national power demand. The success gained from the MOU will be expanded to EGAT’s power plants and future projects for the benefits of the country and the solutions for environmental problems of the country and the world.
Mr. Panun Prachuabmoh, Country Chairman & Chief Financial Officer of the Shell Company of Thailand Limited said that presently, Shell runs its business under Powering Progress strategy. Shell’s various projects have been initiated across the world, such as reduction of CO2 emissions, carbon credit and renewable energy trading, the studies of hydrogen and ammonia, and CCUS, totaling 10 projects. The intentions of Shell and EGAT to reduce GHG emissions released from their operations have led to this collaboration. Shell believes that with the potential of Thailand and its skilled workforce combined with the expertise and experience of EGAT and Shell, the quality of life of Thai people will be improved, which further drives Thailand toward Net Zero Emissions by 2065.
