Commencement of CO2 Injection Field Test in Sukowati Field, Indonesia

Japan Organization for Metals and Energy Security (JOGMEC), PT Pertamina (Persero) (PERTAMINA), PT Pertamina EP (PEP) and Japan Petroleum Exploration Co., Ltd. (JAPEX) announced the commencement of CO2 injection field test in the Sukowati oil field in East Jawa, Republic of Indonesia.

JOGMEC, Pertamina, PEP and JAPEX jointly commenced a CO2 Huff and Puff test in the Sukowati oil field as part of the Joint Study Agreement signed in July 2023. The field test is conducted to verify the effect of CO2 enhanced oil recovery (“EOR”) and CO2 geological storage in the field, and to acquire necessary data to study the commercial implementation of CO2-EOR.

On December 7, 2023, a ceremony was held at the Sukowati oil field to commence CO2 injection, witnessed by Dr. Djoko Siswanto, Secretary General, National Energy Council and Dr. Oki Muraza, Senior Vice President, Research & Technology Innovation, PERTAMINA.

JOGMEC, PERTAMINA and PEP successfully implemented a CO2 Huff and Puff test in the Jatibarang oil field in West Jawa, Indonesia in 2022. This is the second CO2 injection test conducted by Pertamina and PEP, following the CO2 injection in the Jatibarang oil field, and demonstrates that the implementation of the CO2-EOR technology, recognized as one of the major growing CCUS technology in Indonesia, is making steady progress in the country.

The Sukowati oil field is in proximity to a large CO2 emission source and considered to have suitable subsurface reservoir conditions for CO2-EOR. Using the subsurface data to be obtained by this field test, JOGMEC and the joint study partners will continue working for realizing the commercial CO2-EOR implementation in the Sukowati oil field.

JOGMEC engages this project under the Asian Zero Emission Community (AZEC) concept and the Asian Energy Transition Initiative (AETI), both led by the government of Japan, and the project is expected to contribute to the construction of a CCUS network in the Asia region. JOGMEC is committed to improving Japan’s energy security and contributing to sustainable economic development and carbon neutrality in the Asian region, including Indonesia.
